If you’re a bellydancer of any kind, I think that improvisation should make it into your daily practice as much as possible. Nobody ever needs to see or hear it (though it will help if eventually you can get feedback of some kind from someone else, when you’re ready). It can be the silliest-seeming movement you can come up with to pop music. It doesn’t matter. This is your time. Sometimes you have to allow 5 minutes of feeling ineffective, unattractive, tired or unable to concentrate. Our egos stymie us from pushing through at the very place where we should be doing the most work. It also helps to videotape these improvisations, even if they remain Top Secret, so that we can correct our technical poor habits. Remember, the way out is through. This is as much a post for me as it is for you.
