Gothic Bellydance enthusiasts from around the world will gather together again to celebrate and explore their art-form at the second annual event of it’s kind in the United States – Gothla US: The Divining, which this year features a Steampunk theme. Behind its inception are some of the top performers and instructors in the genre, including Tempest – author of The Gothic Bellydance Resource (http://www.gothicbellydance.com/), Sashi of Ascend Tribal, and Asharah of Washington, DC – who will be offering workshops on Saturday. Other instructors throughout the weekend include Lee Ali (CA), Shakra (Washington, DC), Callisto (Sweden), Anaar (CA), and Marjhani (CA).
Gothla US starts off on Friday with workshops and “Motif” – an experimental gathering, merging music, dance, and ritual. During the festival on Saturday, see performances by dancers from all over the nation, as well as Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, and beyond. The festival will kick off with a live performance by Los Angeles’ own steampunk band, The Unextraordinary Gentleman and later on feature the amazing sound and voice of San Francisco’s Jill Tracy. Experience the exotic marketplace featuring the best of both Gothic and Bellydance communities have to offer, including original fashions by designers, antiques and oddities, costuming, jewelry, and art. In the evening, discover for yourself the artistry of the workshop instructors and invited special guests including Hollywood’s own Princess Farhana, in the fabulous Gothic Gala Show.
Gothic Bellydance is considered to be a fusion form of bellydance – it combines the movement vocabulary and musical sensibilities of Middle Eastern Dance with the attitude and aesthetic of the Gothic Subculture – resulting in dramatic performances that explore and expose the darker realms of a dancer’s soul in a theatrical manner.
