hefty hefty hefty Cairo Caravan Update!

Yesterday was a whirlwind, but so much freakin' fun. I woke up at 7:30am to get to MECDA's Cairo Caravan festival on the Queen Mary. First was Bahaia's Samia Gamal styling workshop. I wasn't familiar with Bahaia or her style, really, but she proved to be a very fun and encouraging instructor. I loved learning all the stylizations of the Golden age. Some of it is cheezy, but so much fun to do. Some of the poses are quite different from American Cabaret. The workshop also made me understand that many of my teacher Lilla's poses/postures are influenced by Golden Age style.

Next was Rachel Brice's combos workshop. Unexpectedly, she taught a cabaret-style combination. I think it was a big surprise to everyone. I had a great time, and it was still all with "Rachel" stylization, but it makes me wonder about the future of tribal fusion dance. Seems that almost everyone is going back to Cabaret these days. Tribal Fusion has certainly entered a period of decadence. Because you can kind of fuse tribal with almost anything, I guess the development of that fusion will remain to be seen. I'm not about to give up modern/ballet/jazz fusion because that's what I was trained in, but I've also never objected to making connections between Raqs Sharqi and these other forms.

I had to cut out of Rachel's workshop early in order to go to performer check-in. It was crazy and I forgot my makeup carrier in the workshop room! I ran back and forth a lot and basically spread out getting ready between two different bathrooms. Makeup took way shorter than it should have because I didn't know how much time I actually had. Managed to walk through a couple times before I performed. The dance wasn't perfect but some surprise spots went much better than they did in rehearsals, and the turns were mostly terrible because I was so exhausted from Rachel's class. I also had a costuming mishap and bled through my underwear, making me unable to wear the pants I originally wanted to wear, but luckily I had a backup pair of black Melos with me. Good to note for next time.

Overall I had a great time, even though I couldn't stay to watch many of the other dancers.
